Thousands evacuated after wildfire break out on La Palma

Over 4,000 people have been evacuated from their homes on the northeastern area of La Palma following a wildfire which broke out at the weekend.

The fire was first reported in the early hours of Saturday morning, and spread rapidly destroying over 4,500 hectares of land, with a number of buildings and homes also burnt down.

Around 400 emergency teams, including nine helicopters and two sea planes are involved in trying to bring the fire under control, however high temperatures and strong winds are hampering efforts at present.

Yesterday afternoon it was confirmed that the fire had reached the Caldera de Taburiente National Park. Puntagorda and Tijarafe have also been evacuated, as well as some properties in the town of El Paso.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and King Feilpe VI are understood to be in regular communication with regional president Fernando Clavijo, with authorities in the archipelago issuing a level 2 forest fire warning on the island.
